Calling Writers! Are you taking your writing to the Edinburgh Fringe?
The BBC Writers Team look for writers in a number of different ways. This includes attending new writing events, plays, screenings and festivals. Every year we head to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe to search for new and exciting writing talent, so we want to hear from you!
If your show is on at one of the Popcorn Award partner venues then applications are open until 10am on 21st June to be considered for this year’s award. Applications for the Popcorn Award are made via the venue.

Members of the BBC Writers Team will be in the city at various times during the Fringe, so if you have a show running, please let us know!
Please note:
- We can only attend new writing performances for Drama and Comedy/Drama shows. Comedy writer and writer/performer development is looked after by BBC Comedy Commissioning and not the BBC Writers team (we are part of Drama Commissioning) so we will not respond to invitations for pure Comedy, stand up or sketch shows.
- New, original writing and characters only. No adaptations or parodies of another writer’s idea (including adaptations of other writers’ novels) or shows featuring existing characters from literary works or popular culture.
- Writers must be permanent residents of the UK or Republic of Ireland to apply for all of our writer development schemes, therefore we cannot attend shows written by writers who are based overseas, even if you are based in Edinburgh for the duration of the festival.
- We cannot guarantee that we will be able to respond to or attend every invitation sent to us.
