Online Tutorials

During the course of the Bruntwood Prize we will be releasing a series of online tutorials that take you through different aspects of your writing. Each tutorial is designed to give you a series of exercises that build into your own work on the play or your own writing practice. Each writer approaches things from their own perspective, our aim isn’t to tell you what you have to do, but suggest things you might like to try.

Click on the links below to access the tutorials as they become available:

  1. Character – developing and exploring your characters (Cheryl Martin)
  2. Story on Stage – writing for live theatre and structuring your story (Duncan Macmillan)
  3. Scene and Action – how to structure a scene and on-stage action (Ben Musgrave)
  4. Drafting and Re-drafting – ways of getting your script into the stage you want it to be in (Suzanne Bell)

To keep up to date with the release of each tutorial, sign up to our Bruntwood Prize Newsletter using the form to the right.

    • Hi Harry,

Thanks for your comment. Hopefully writeaplay.co.uk can provide as much help as possible. There are a range of resources on the site now including ideas for getting started, tips from other writers and the chance to read about the experiences of other winners. There will be a webchat on the site between 5pm and 6pm on Monday 7th February, the first of a series, and we will be launching our online tutorials soon – a series of workshops by different writers that guide you through different parts of the process. All of these are free to access.

      Good luck!
