Michael Oglesby DL, LLD, DSc

Dr Michael Oglesby DL, LLD, DSc is Chairman of the Bruntwood Group of companies, which is privately held and owned by the Family.  He formed the companies, which have grown from a modest beginning, to becoming one of the leading commercial property owners in the North of England, 30 years ago.  The Company owns in excess of 65 building in Central and South Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds, comprising approximately 5,000,000, sq ft with a value in excess of £1 billion.  In Manchester city centre the Company owns approximately 20% of the commercial office stock and, year on year, has acquired and let more property than any other company in this market.

At the beginning of 2000 Michael Oglesby gave up the joint roles of CEO and Chairman and his son, Chris, took over the day-to-day running of the Company.  Currently he devotes approximately a third of the week to the Company as Executive Chairman, and the remainder to an extensive variety civic and charitable interests.

He is Chairman of the following organisations :

•    The Steering Board for the Manchester Cancer Research Centre
•    MIDAS – the inward investment organisation for Greater Manchester
•    The Board of Governors of the Royal Northern College of Music

In addition, he sits on the board of the North West Business Leadership Team, the Manchester International Festival and the Global Leadership Board for the University of Manchester.  He is Vice President of the School of Tropical Medicine at Liverpool University and is a Feoffee of Chetham’s School of Music, as well as leading the team responsible for building the new School of Music.

He is Chairman of the Oglesby Charitable Trust and, along with his wife Jean, daughter Kate and daughter-in-law Jane, is actively involved in its day-to-day activities.  The Trust has rapidly grown into one of the region’s major charitable giving organisations.  Alongside this role, he is also responsible for the community giving in Bruntwood, which together amount to well over £1 million per annum.

In May 2006 the University of Manchester awarded him an honorary doctorate in Law, and in December of the same year he was voted Businessman of the Year in the North West by the CBI. In 2007 Aston University bestowed an honorary doctorate in Science upon him.  In April 2007 he was appointed High Sheriff of Greater Manchester.
