Phil Porter
Phil Porter won third place in the 2006 Bruntwood Competition with THE CRACKS IN MY SKIN, which received a Studio production at the Royal Exchange in 2008. His other plays include STEALING SWEETS AND PUNCHING PEOPLE (Theatre 503 and Off-Broadway), SMASHED EGGS (Pentabus Theatre, winner of the Arts Council Children’s Award), and ISOLATED CHILDREN IN FAR AWAY PLACES (The Studio, Royal Exchange Theatre). He has also written for television and opera.
I'd been working on THE CRACKS IN MY SKIN for a while when I heard about The Bruntwood Awards. I had seen a couple of rehearsed readings of the play which had given me some ideas on how I might improve it. The competition gave me the spur I needed to put those ideas into practice.
I entered the play for the competition the day before the closing date. I didn't dare hope too much, even when I knew I was on the shortlist, but when I found out I had won an award I was ecstatic. Of course, the prize money was fantastic, but more importantly, I knew it would draw lots of people's attention to my writing.
Tip: Take every opportunity to hear your play read out loud. If you don't know any actors just get your friends to do it.
