Royal Exchange Young Company Collective workshops

YOUNG COLLECTIVE IS OUR MEMBERSHIP SCHEME WHICH GIVES YOUNG PEOPLE AGED 14-21 OPEN-ACCESS TO WORKSHOPS AT THE ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE.

Memberships are £20 for the year and can be purchased online.

We offer Financial support to help with membership fees and travel costs through our Arts Pot scheme.

Playreading Club
09 March 2022 at 6pm
The Front Room

This workshop is a very informal and light-hearted approach to experiencing new theatre through reading. Members will be having an open disussion about the themes they uncover within a play, as well as watching and performing extracts within a given text. The Playreading Club is great place to broden your understanding of art by deconstructing it.

Intro to Creative Writing
23 March 2022 at 6pm
The Studio

What do we learn about a person from how they speak? A creative writing workshop exploring how to create a character’s voice, whether based on real-life experiences or completely fantastical. Through short practical writing exercises, we will explore how to create believable well-rounded characters with distinctive voices. We will be focusing on creating characters for the stage, but these skills could be applied to TV or prose as well.

Intro to Stage Management
06 April 2022 at 6pm

In this workshop, we’ll be delving into the roles a Stage Manager undertakes, and how they work within a creative team. We’ll be looking at career pathways into the industry, and how to prepare for moving out of the rehearsal period, into tech week. A Stage Manager liaises with lots of different people within different departments, so we’ll be breaking down what it means to oversee, facilitate, and coordinate a theatre production.

Intro to Acting

How does the journey of a young, budding actor begin? Explore what it means to be a working actor in the industry, and how to strengthen your abilities as a performer. This workshop is both educational and practical, as tackle how to prepare for an audition, approaching new texts, and filming a self tape.

How to Light a Theatre Space

In this lighting design workshop, we will develop our understanding of how to illuminate a theatre space to convey atmosphere an emotion. We will look at some primary skills of lighting, and how this component works with other mediums such as set and sound design.

How to Design a Theatre Space

The Front Room

Set design is all about creating a world and environment for characters to exist in. We’ll be playing around with the various ways in which you can design a space, as well as using a white card model to conceptualise and format design ideas.

Creating a Character Through Costume

The Front Room

We will be exploring costume design and taking inspiration from the production of Red Velvet. What are some of the practical skills required to becoming a costume designer? Explore the idea of bringing a character to life through stylistic choices, as well as drafting up designs for potential scenes and moments within a play.
