I’m Gonna Jump – by Tiffany Bowman

One hundred plays make it through three rounds of reading to the Bruntwood Prize Longlist. As the Longlist is announced prior to the final Judges meeting to decide upon the winners of the Bruntwood Prize the Longlist announcement remains anonymous. By the end of 2017- all Longlisted writers have received a script report and there’s no longer any need to stay anonymous. So we were delighted to discover Royal Exchange Young Company Member, and member of the John Thaw Trainee scheme on the list!

Tiffany Bowman says of her longlisting and the new production of her play I’M GONNA JUMP;

“Submitting my first full-length play to the Bruntwood Prize was one of the best decisions I ever made. When I found out that “I’m Gonna Jump” had made the longlist, I was over the moon! To know that people had read it and liked it was extremely encouraging, and it made me all the more determined to develop it further and not let it rot away on a USB stick!

I wouldn’t have been able to produce a script at all without the support and encouragement I received through the Royal Exchange Theatre. The John Thaw scheme allowed me to receive 1-to-1 mentoring and feedback for my play (thanks Matt!), and being in the Young Writers also gave me the skills and confidence to pursue a career in writing.

I’m currently collaborating with Fabricate Theatre to develop my play. I was really keen to work with them because they’re passionate about showcasing the issues of young people, and they’ve helped me to look at my piece with a fresh set of eyes. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the play evolves from page to stage.”

“Date nights. Hashtags. Workouts. Updates. Cat gifs – does your head in sometimes, don’t it?”

When Ella doesn’t receive an offer from University, her toxic comments towards her friend trigger a backlash of hate and disgust from her peers, leading to serious consequences.

“I’m Gonna Jump” runs from 15-17th July 2018 at 53Two as part of the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival. Book tickets here.
