ARC is a place-based organisation in an area of low cultural engagement, committed to using arts and culture to strengthen our local community, with ambitions to grow our reach and impact. They work locally, in Stockton and the Tees Valley, but also regionally and nationally, leading networks and partnerships designed to improve and share their practice.
What’s On Your Mind? is a series of digital artist commissions designed to reflect what is concerning local communities in 2021. Led by Creative Director Paula Clark and funded by Arts Council England Project Grant, the project will include consultation with our communities to develop the provocations, a series of 14 digital commissions created in response, broadcast weekly Oct – Dec, and targeted engagement activities using the works as an entry point for new audiences.
Many Tees Valley communities feel very ignored, with their stories and voices rarely reflected in the mainstream media. This has been heightened by the pandemic, with many feeling invisible, hidden away in their homes, cut off from their support networks. For many, lockdown hasn’t just been physical, but mental too.
This project is designed as a way for people’s concerns to be aired and shared, and will provide a new way of listening and responding to our communities, where ARC does not become the filter, but enables the conversation to be held more between artists and communities.
The Creative Director will be running consultations with community groups and then shaping provocations to give to an artist who will be commissioned £1,000 to make a rapid response piece of work. The response can be any art form but must be able to be interacted with/performed/viewed digitally. These pieces of work will be broadcast to the public between mid-Oct – Dec.
This is an open call for artists and not restricted to artists from Tees Valley although they will be looking for artists that care about social justice.
