BBC Radio 4 Today Programme Student Journalism Awards

The first ever BBC Radio 4 Today Programme Student Journalism Awards has seven categories designed to recognise excellence in student journalism, with prizes including paid traineeships and work experience placements with BBC News. Most notably in the Student Critic of the Year 2018 category they’re looking for the best in student criticism on any platform – that’s reviews, essays, or cultural commentary.

Deadline

23:59 on 31 August 2018

For this category three judges will review all submissions and select a list of three shortlisted entries. The shortlist will be announced on or after 4 October 2018.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an interview with the category judges in London between 8 and 17 October 2018.

The winner will be announced at an Awards ceremony on 24 October 2018 at the Radio Theatre, Broadcasting House, London. All shortlisted entries will be invited to the Awards ceremony.

How to enter

Your writing or commentary should provide a fresh and illuminating perspective on your chosen subject, laced with large doses of wit and creativity.

Entrants will need to submit three examples of work they have produced while in full- or part-time education and published or broadcast in media aimed either solely or predominantly at a student audience during the academic year 2017-18.

In order to enter for this award you must be a UK resident (including Channel Islands and the Isle of Man) and a full- or part-time student during the academic year 2017-2018. Proof of age, identity and eligibility may be requested.

You can enter as many categories as you like in the Radio 4 Today Programme Student Journalist Awards but can only be shortlisted in one individual category (categories 1 to 5) and one team category (categories 6 and 7). The chair of judges, in consultation with the relevant category judges, will decide in which category you should be shortlisted if your entries make it to the final stages of shortlisting in more than one category.
