create-write-connect- Spread the Word’s free writing courses

create-write-connect is Spread the Word’s campaign to offer free writing activity during these unprecedented, difficult times. As part of this, they are offering three free writing courses via email. These courses are designed with creativity and accessibility at its heart; it is free to take part in, optimised for screen reading, and include transcriptions and alternative descriptions of music.

Each week, you’ll receive an email that will contain writing exercises for you to complete at your own pace, in your own time, with readings and optional tasks to share on social media. There is no pressure to complete work for any deadlines. There is no sharing your work or giving / receiving feedback. This is about creating, enjoying, and finding inspiration in your own time and space.

All you need is access to email (and if you don’t have access to email – or know someone who would like to take part and doesn’t have access to email they can print and post these tasks to people who would like to take part but who may not be able to). You need about 1 – 2 hours a week to take part, but of course due to the fact these exercises aren’t designed around certain times, you can save them and do them whenever you can.

Connecting Your Creativity with Jasmine Cooray

6 weekly offerings of creative resources and stimuli to support gentle and deepening connection with your creative writing, including audio-recordings and a combination of open prompts and structured exercises. This sequence aims to support a relaxed relationship with creativity and will incorporate some mindfulness principles to aid this.

Each week you’ll receive an email with a set of different exercises to try out, with a slightly different focus each week. Some exercises will be more open, some structured, and you will also receive some supporting audio files, stimulus poems, images and links to music. The emails will be designed so that you can either go through each exercise in turn as if you were in a live workshop, or pick and choose at random according to your preference. Some of the stimulus will be more introspective, some more outward-focused. Feel free to participate in the way that suits you.

Dates

You’ll receive 6 emails, one a week, on / around the following dates:

‘Neadaireacht /Nesting’ with Kerri ní Dochartaigh

‘The world is dark / but the wood is full of stars.’ – Seán Hewitt

Just as staying apart is a way to keep each other safe right now, to write in these times is a way to draw close to one another. To listen, to learn, to grow, to nurture, to heal. What does it mean to write in such times? To write in these times, is to live in these times. To write in these times is to give in these times. To give the only thing we really have – that which we have been storing up since we were wee: our truthful, raw, echoing, flocking words.

In this course we will carve space in our lives – no matter how changed those lives may feel right now – to write about our lives.
