Open event. A roundtable discussion on the fair employment of freelancers working in theatre, launching our contract and fees package for dramaturgs.On Monday, 21 June 2021, the Dramaturgs’ Network launches the d’n Dramaturgs’ Contract Package on its website.

This is the first official recommendation created by a professional body in the UK to enable dramaturgs and producers to create fair contracts for freelance dramaturgs. To mark this launch, join us for an online roundtable with invited industry professionals from the UK, Europe and the US to discuss how better contractual practices can be achieved for freelancers in theatre.

Facilitator:

Catriona Craig (UK)

Catriona has worked in dramaturgy and script development for stage and screen for over fifteen years, most recently on Close Quarters for Out of Joint. She also produced their young writer development programme, The Andrea Project. She is Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts and Acting at Buckinghamshire New University.

Catriona is a dramaturg and academic with a background in theatre, tv and film. Most recently she has been the in-house literary manager for the touring theatre company, Out of Joint, and is now Associate Dramaturg for that company and also a Senior Lecturer in Performing Arts at Buckinghamshire New University.

Participants:

Ken Cerniglia (US) is a veteran dramaturg, writer, creative consultant and organisational leader. His dramaturgy includes the Broadway hits Hadestown and Peter and the Starcatcher and over 70 other titles during his 16 years at Disney Theatrical. He is a past president of LMDA and holds a Ph.D from the University of Washington.

David Harris (UK) worked as a stage manager and company manager before qualifying as a Company Secretary and as an MBA. He was Business Manager at Company of Angels for nine years and worked on two major European festivals. He was also Finance Manager of Told by an Idiot and is now Business Manager for Simon Spencer Productions Ltd.

Jarkko Lehmus (FI) works as the producer and dramaturg responsible for the artistic programme of Cirko – Center for New Circus in Helsinki, Finland. As a freelance dramaturg, director and choreographer he specialises in non-verbal performative arts.

Katalin Trencsényi (UK/HU) is an independent dramaturg, researcher and theatre-maker working and teaching internationally. She is the author of Dramaturgy in the Making. A User’s Guide for Theatre Practitioners (Bloomsbury Methuen Drama, 2015; Chinese language edition: National Performing Arts Center, Taipei, 2016). Katalin is co-founder of the Dramaturgs’ Network.
