Discovery is Kali’s free writing programme for aspiring playwrights in the East Midlands, West Midlands and London, in collaboration with Birmingham Repertory Theatre , Leicester Curve and London’s Pleasance Theatre. It will run from September 2018 to March 2019
The programme is open to UK based women writers of South Asian descent* who are eligible to live and work in the UK *At least one parent must be descended from the diasporas of the Indian subcontinent
Eligibility
Writers must be able to get to one of Kali’s partner venues. (A small bursary is available to help with travel expenses)
No previous writing experience is necessary
To apply, you need to email
1. A script of approximately 10 pages
- It must be for a cast of no more than 4 actors. (There can be more than 4 characters if it is possible for one actor to play more than one part)
- For advice on laying out a script please see the Getting Started page in the Resources section on the Kali website
- Please include the play title and your name on the first page
- Please include a list of the characters and a brief description of each one
- It must be in Word doc or PDF format. NOT Pages format
- Ensure that the play’s title is in the file name
- The play must be entirely your own work
2. In the email with the play please state
- Your full name and address
- What inspired you to choose the subject/situation in your play.
- What previous experience if any you have of writing for theatre
- Confirm that you are eligible to live and work in the UK

Deadlines
Tuesday 24 July
Kali’s Reader Panel at each venue will read and select the four most promising plays. They will let you know the outcome by mid-September.
