Middle Child Hull- Developing New Critics Programme

Every year Middle Child will develop two new local critics with support from the best theatre writers in the country, including Lyn Gardner (The Stage), Natasha Tripney (The Stage) and Alice Saville (Exeunt Magazine).

Working with a number of regional theatres and companies including Hull Truck Theatre, Middle Child will arrange tickets, travel and payment to critique performances, with their work published on the Hot Potato reviews website.

This programme will also help to diversify the voices involved in theatre criticism by offering opportunities to those who may not otherwise be able to gain experience as a critic. They are also especially interested in developing new and alternative forms of theatre criticism, such as vlogging and podcasting.

Workshops will take place on the following dates:

Monday 15th July, 10.30am-2.30pm

Tuesday 16th July, 10.30am-2.30pm

Wednesday 17th July, 10.30am-2.30pm

Our new critics will then start reviewing work from the middle of July.

Who can apply

The programme is open to any individual who is:

  • a current resident local to Hull with a HU postcode;
  • over the age of 18.
