National Queer Theater accepting international submissions for The Criminal Queerness Festival

National Queer Theater is a US based producing organization dedicated to the progress of new works. They are especially seeking social justice-based theater and the work of LGBTQ artists. The National Queer Theater is now accepting submissions for the second Criminal Queerness Festival, which will take place in New York City during June of 2020.

Queer voices across the world have been silenced by states where LGBTQ lives are criminalized. The Criminal Queerness Festival features plays that stage LGBTQ experiences in some of the 69 countries where same-sex activity is illegal or where transgender and non-binary identities are not legally recognized.

Four plays will be selected and given a production in New York City. The plays will be performed in a festival format with directors and actors from National Queer Theater. The winning playwrights will be awarded a stipend of $500 USD each.

Submission Criteria

  • Works that address the lives of LGBTQ people outside of the United States, written by playwrights from or living in those countries, will be considered.
  • Plays must not have been previously produced in the United States.

Deadline:

11 October 2019 at 11pm EST
