“I don’t know if I love you because I have to or because I can’t help it.

I don’t know if both of those things are bad. I don’t know why it feels painful here.

It don’t feel right…”

babirye bukilwa’s second play …CAKE is the second in their psychological thriller trilogy. Delving unapologetically into the heart of Eshe’s childhood, power and duty battle in equal measure.

An origin story to …blackbird hour (Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2020 finalist and Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2019 shortlist), …CAKE lays the foundations of a young, gay Black woman’s earliest memories and asks if Black womxn are ever afforded youth and solace in a society that asks them to constantly perform, even in their bedrooms.

…CAKE stars Tamara Lawrance (Twelfth Night, National Theatre; The Long Song, BBC1) and Toyin Ayedun-Alase(Man Down, Channel 4; Threepennyopera, National Theatre) and is directed by Associate Director malakaï sargeant. Developed as part of Theatre Peckham’s Artist-in-Residence programme.
